Trick or Treat
by Anna Mae Wittig

Is it time for all the munchkins,
To come knocking at my door?
The parade of different costumes
Innocent faces I adore?

I remember when we worked so hard,
On costumes for my own,
And I miss all the excitement
Now that the kids are grown.

The fun they had in picking out,
Who each one should portray,
A nurse, a cowboy, super-friend,
What image to convey?

It need not be elaborate,
Not perfect, in any way,
But it must be authentic,
So we'd spend many a day,

Searching trunks and thrift shops
And grandpa's back room closet,
This from here, that from there,
Till we had the right composite.

Then decorate the front yard,
With graves, pumpkins and ghosts,
Stand Dracula in the doorway,
And hang spiders from the post.

A microphone wired to the witch,
In a cackling voice, we'd say

Welcome little kiddies,
Are you having a nice day?

To hear people complaining,
That these waifs disturb their night,
And that scavenging is begging
To me seem rather trite!

For, a few small bags of candy,
Is a little price to pay,
For a multi-cast production,
Brought right to your own driveway!

It is surely "Grandma Heaven"
Excited faces at the door,
Dragging sacks filled up with goodies,
Till they can't fit anymore,

And you know your contribution,
Can't in anyway repay,
The joy, they've brought into your heart,
With one small smile this day.
